With climate change proceeding rapidly, endangering nature and human beings all around the world, societies need to move to more sustainable technologies. This applies especially to the aviation sector. In order to reach a sustainable operation of aircraft activities in the future, significant reductions of CO2 reductions will be necessary. The clean sky programs of the EU have successfully demonstrated cleaner and environmentally friendlier approaches and will so in the future. LiBAT, as part of the clean Sky 2 program, addresses necessary innovations in battery technology needed for the realization of electric propulsion.

To achieve a reliable, efficient and safe operation of electric propulsion, battery systems must be optimized in terms of energy storage capacity, electrical power, mass, volume and thermal management requirements. The main goal of LiBAT is to design and assemble a prototype of a high voltage lithium battery with state-of-the-art energy density and feasible integration into current aircraft architectures.
